Eye Movement De-sensitization and Re-processing (EMDR) and Emotional Freedom technique (EFT)

Both these body based techniques are used in the treatment of trauma and traumatic memories and work by resolving disruptions in the way the brain handles and stores emotions.

EMDR (Eye Movement De-sensitization and Re-processing) was developed by the American psychologist Dr Helen Shapiro. EMDR has been found to be so effective in the treatment of trauma that it is recommended by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) for the treatment of post-traumatic shock disorder. EMDR is mainly used in the treatment of specific traumas.

Emotional freedom technique (EFT) is a meridian based therapy devised by Gary Craig, following his training in Thought Form Therapy (TFT). EFT is a gentler treatment than EMDR because it focuses on symptoms rather than the trauma itself. EFT has also been found to be effective for conditions where there is no remembered trauma – such as with phobias and physical pains & symptoms where there is no obvious cause.

A review of the use of EMDR and EFT, called ‘Tap away the trauma’ can be seen in the Times Online.
